Seminar on Biodiversity Conservation : Kerala State Legal Services Authority in association with the Kerala Bio-Diversity Board organized a seminar on “Bio-diversity - Conservation and Development – Challenges and Possible Solutions” from 9.30 a.m. to 5.p.m. on 9th January 2010 in the Banquet Hall of the High Court. The Hon’ble Mr.Justice V.R.Krishna Iyer, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India inaugurated the function. The Hon’ble Mr.Justice S.R.Bannurmath, Chief Justice, High Court of Kerala delivered the Keynote address and the function was presided over by the Hon’ble Executive Chairman. The classes were led by eminent Scientists in the field. About 200 participants including all the Principals, District Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrates, Judicial Officers in Ernakulam City, Advocates and Law Students attended the function.

Interaction with HIV affected children : The Hon’ble Executive Chairman had an interaction with children living with HIV/AIDS and children with physical and mental disability at the High Court Committee Room on 11th January 2010 to share their feelings and issues faced by them. Members of the Authority also attended the function. It was decided to constitute a sub-committee with the Member Secretary, KELSA as convener, for studying the various issues faced by the children and to frame remedial measures for alleviating the hardships faced by them.

Seminar on Endocrinology : Kerala State Legal Services Authority in association with Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum(LEAF) conducted a seminar on Endocrinology on 14th January 2010 at the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association Hall. The seminar was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Kurian Joseph, Executive Chairman, KELSA and was presided over by Adv. V.V.Sidharthan, President, Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association. Special Address on the topic was done by Dr. R.V.Jayakumar, Professor of Endocrinology AIMS Kochi.

Seminar on Competition Law : A seminar on “ Competition laws: Challenges and Answers” was conducted on 16th January 2010 at Thiruvananthapuram jointly by KELSA, Competition Appellate Tribunal, Department of Industries and Commerce, Association of Chartered Accountants, Confederation of Indian Industry and Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association. The function was inaugurated by Sri. N.K.Premachandran, Hon’ble Minister for Water Resources and presided over by Justice Arijit Pasayat, Chairman, National Competition Appellate Tribunal. Hon’ble Mr.Justice P.R.Raman, Judge, High Court of Kerala delivered the keynote address. The inaugural session was followed by Academic Session led by experts.

Inauguration of Legal Aid Clinic at Central Prison, Viyyur: A Legal Aid Clinic started functioning at the premises of the Central Prison, Viyyur on the 61st Republic Day of India, the 26th January 2010 under the auspices of KELSA. The inauguration was done by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Kurian Joseph, Acting Chief Justice and Executive Chairman, KELSA. The function was presided over by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Pius C.Kuriakose, Judge, High Court of Kerala . The function was also attended by Sri. P.C.Chacko, Member of Parliament.

One day Workshop on Essential Labour Laws, ESI Act and EPF Act : KELSA in association with Catholic Health Association of India – Kerala Voluntary Health Services conducted a one day workshop on Essential Labour Laws, ESI Act and EPF Act on 30th January 2010 at Pastoral Orientation Centre, Palarivattom. The workshop was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr.Justice M.L.Joseph Francis, Judge, High Court of Kerala.

Mega Lok Adalat on 20.2.2010 : An Adalat was conducted on 20.2.2010 at the District Court Hall, Ernakulam by Kerala State Legal Services Authority for settlement of cases filed by M/s.Federal Bank Ltd. before the Debts Recovery Tribunal, Ernakulam and pre-litigation maters. The Adalat was preceded by an inaugural function. Hon’ble Mr.Justice P.R.Raman, Acting Chief Justice & Patron-in-Chief, KELSA inaugurated the function and Hon’ble Mr.Justice C.N.Ramachandran Nair, Executive Chairman designate of KELSA presided over the function.  Of the 59 cases considered, 21 were settled. An amount of Rs. 4.61 crore was awarded in the Adalat.
    In continuation of the Adalat conducted on 20.2.2010 for DRT cases, a Lok Adalat was conducted on 3.3.2010 for considering the cases which were not taken up in the Adalat on 20.2.2010. 3 cases were settled and an amount of Rs.49 lakh was awarded.

Seminar on Women Empowerment : As a part of its project for “Promotion of women empowerment and rights, to end violence against women in the State of Kerala” supported by National Legal Services Authority, the NGO, PCSJ in association with KELSA, LSG institutions and Kudumbasree Mission, is organizing awareness camps occasionally. One such camp was conducted on 22.4.2010 at Fort Kochi and another one was conducted on 12.5.2010 at Cheranelloor Grama Panchayat, Ernakulam.

May Day : May Day was observed under the joint auspices of KELSA and NORMS Management Associates by conducting a seminar on E.S.I and E.P.F. benefits. The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Cyriac Joseph, Judge, Supreme Court of India and was presided over by Hon’ble Mr.Justice C.N.Ramachandran Nair, Executive Chairman, KELSA and the Key Note address was given by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Pius.C.Kuriakose, Judge, High Court of Kerala.

World Environment Day : This year, World Environment Day was observed by KELSA on 5th June in association with Lawyers’ Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF) and Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association. The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr.Justice C.N.Ramachandran Nair, Executive Chairman, KELSA and Keynote address was given by Dr.K.P.Ouseph, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wild Life).

Legal Literacy Programme at Sultan Bathery : KELSA in association with Shreyas Social Service Centre and Taluk Legal Services Committee, Sulthan Bathery conducted a legal literacy programme on 12th June for the welfare and legal upliftment of tribals in Wayanad. The literacy programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Pius C.Kuriakose, Judge, High Court of Kerala and was presided over by Smt.P.Usha, District and Sessions Judge, Kalpetta. Sri.P.Mohanadas, Member Secretary, KELSA also attended the programme.

Regional Conference on Child Rights : A Regional Conference on Rights of Children and Role of Legal Services Authority was conducted by NALSA in association with KELSA on 7th and 8th August 2010 at High Court. The 2 day programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Altamas Kabir, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, NALSA and was presided over by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Chief Justice, High Court of Kerala. Special address was given by Prof. (Dr.) Shantha Sinha, Chairperson, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The participants of the conference were Hon’ble Executive Chairpersons and Member Secretaries of State Legal Services Authorities, Secretaries of Social Welfare Departments, Chairpersons of Child Welfare Committees, Principal Magistrates of Juvenile Justice Boards and Social activists of the 10 States/UTs of the Southern region. There were 6 sessions in the conference, viz., Rights of Children – Role of Legal Services Authority, Juveniles in conflict with law, Child Labour – a bane, Children in need of care and protection, Child Abuse and Right to Education. These sessions were chaired by Hon’ble Executive Chairpersons of the State Legal Services Authorities of the Southern Region. The sessions were dealt with by Resource Persons including Advocates, Child Right Activists, Secretaries of Social Welfare Departments, Psychologists and Child Welfare Committee Members etc.
